The brief for this project was simple and followed our strategy of Buy, refurbish refinance. The aim was to add value to an existing 3 bedroom property by building a side extension that would serve a self-contained studio apartment. The aim was to complete the work within our £25,000 budget which we knew was going to be a challenge given the amount of work we needed to do and wanted the work done in four months. Once the planning permission was sorted, the work began in earnest and we made good progress. To keep to our budget, we made some budgetary decisions such as buying a flatpack kitchen off eBay for £450 instead of spending over a thousand on a custom made kitchen, we also decided to keep certain luxury items like wood flooring and porcelain tiles for the bathroom. The work was completed just 15 days later than planned and only exceeded the budget by £3,000. I would like to think that my Project management background came in handy in keeping the project on track.
